“Awesome, driving, anointed worship. . .” is how our Student Pastor, Anthony Potts a.k.a. “Pottsy” described the experience that our youth group could look forward to as we made our way to YEC 2007 (Youth Evangelism Conference) in Nashville, TN this past weekend. We were not disappointed.

I have fond memories of YEC back in my High School days, but the current crop of Christian worship leaders and bands is much better in my opinion. We heard Charlie Hall and Barlow Girl in two different sessions at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium. The 25 or so students as well as us chaperons definitely had a “Real Encounter” (the theme of this year’s YEC) with Christ. One of our youth accepted Christ as his savior. That made it worth all the lack of sleep and inconveniences of tagging along with the younger generation for two days!

My video shooting and editing skills have been improving and I plan to post a short video summary of the trip in the next week or so.

After reading several reviews of Video NLE (non linear editing) software I downloaded the trial version of Sony Vegas Movie Studio and was so impressed that I just ordered a copy from Amazon.com. Vegas is much better than Ulead Video Studio 5 which was an older version of another program that came with my new Firewire card. I completed our church’s Christmas Play video with the Ulead product and it did the job, but wasn’t very stable. With my still somewhat limited skill-set, Vegas Movie Studio seems to do anything that I could ever want and does it well. It runs rock-solid so far on my almost six year old PC. I’m sure the “full” version of Vegas adds many more features, but it will probably take me a while to master the Movie Studio version.

Anyway, sorry for going off on a tangent, but I’m really getting into shooting and editing video. I am planning to compile a video at the end of the year summarizing our youth group’s events throughout 2007. It will be fun exercise.

I hope you know The One who is the real meaning of Christmas. If not, then that is the most important preparation you can make. Forget the commercial aspect of Christmas if you don’t have a relationship with Jesus. Contact me if you would like to find out more.

Having said that I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! This is a special one for us since we have a three year old in the house. We do believe in Santa Claus around here!

We’ve had a magical couple of days since I have taken vacation days to supplement the regular holiday days off. Amy, Savannah and I have just enjoyed each other’s company along with some shopping, baking cookies and wrapping gifts. Savannah is VERY aware of how Christmas “works” now. Her favorite movie is Elf with Will Ferrell. I think she watched at least most of it three times yesterday. I’m a little bit tired of it but there are a couple of scenes that are funny. . .I don’t care who you are!

I have big plans for the rest of my time off. Planning for 2007 is high on my list. I’m happy but not thrilled with my personal growth in 2006. Considering I didn’t HAVE a personal growth plan this time last year I guess I can’t complain.

All the best from our family to yours!

Brett Weaver

P.S. Don’t forget to start 2007 with a plan.

John 17

Jesus Christ prayed for ME individually and He prayed for YOU too. As He was facing His brutal crucifixion which would provide the bridge into an everlasting life for mankind he prayed for us.

Wow. I get chills each time I really dwell on this passage.
I just ran across an excellent commentary on this chapter from John. Here’s a highlight:

By the love of the Father, through the power of the Holy Spirit, in the name of Jesus, we must revisit this prayer often and consider the nature of our faith in Christ; our hope for eternal life; and the love of God from which Spirit and Truth find their meaning in us. -Don Forss

I’m very thankful that I know Jesus as my Saviour. It is my prayer that you do too. Contact me if you would like more information on how to have the peace that only comes through a relationship with Christ.

That is why I was honored to be invited to the Gideons. Today I have come full circle. I participated in my second scripture distribution and we distributed scriptures to local fifth graders. Each and every one (forty-five in all at the school I personally visited) gladly accepted a red Testament. Please pray that the doors to our schools stay open to this ministry.

As Becky fumbled to shut off the annoying alarm clock that had disturbed what little sleep she got last night, the full force of grief hit her again. What would she do now? Her husband had been severly beaten in a robery attempt just a few days before and now lay in critical condition in the hospital.

It seemed as if the whole world was crashing down around her. At least this recent crisis took her mind off some of the worries about her mother who had been admitted to a nursing home a year earlier.

Shaking off the intense urge to stay in bed Becky readied herself for her 8 am class at Columbia State and headed out. She knew it would be difficult to stay focused on her studies, but she pressed on.

As she opened the front door of the school she was met by a well dressed man with a wide smile across his face. “Just what I need” she thought, someone chipper to deal with. Instead of the expected “special offer” of the week, this man held out a small green New Testament Bible and asked her if she would like to have it. “Sure” she said and thanked him as he wished her a good day.

Between classes she felt the urge to open the little Bible. As she scanned a few pages she found this passage:

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

As she thought about this verse tears came to her eyes because she knew that God was going to work out all the difficulties in her life, if she would only lean on Him.

After school she shared with her mother how her day was turned around by the gift she received. “Who was the man who gave you the Bible?” her mom asked. “You know, I didn’t even ask him.” She pulled the Bible out of her bag and looked at it closer. Inside the front cover was the explanation. He was a Gideon. “I haven’t thought about the Gideons since they came to my school in the fifth grade. I probably still have that red testament that they gave me somewhere”.

While she was still at the nursing home another Christian businessman paid her mother a visit. Anthony was her insurance agent, but had also become her friend during the time of her stay. Becky shared her experience with Anthony. “That is so awesome! I just talked to one of my good friends who is a Gideon this morning. He told me he was about to go to a scripture distribution. It’s possible he was the one who gave you the Testament.” A quick call to the Gideon friend confirmed that he was indeed at Becky’s school earlier that morning, but there was no way to know if he was the one who actually gave her the Bible.

Sometimes it seems that God has forgotten about us and that he is no longer in the prayer answering business. The Gideons place scriptures without knowing if they will get to personally reap the harvest of the seed that they plant. In this case feedback came within the hour!

The names are fictional but this is a true story. I was the Gideon on the scripture distribution. In addition to this community college, the Gideons distribute scriptures in 181 countries around the world in 83 languages. To learn more about the ministry of the Gideon’s International click here. We covet your prayers, and If you feel led to contribute to the Gideons monitarily contact me by leaving a comment about this post.

God Bless
