Dell Vostro 1520 Unboxing

By Brett · Comments (0)
Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

vostro-1520My first computer had an Intel 386, 66mhz processor with 16mb of RAM and a 40 megabyte hard drive. This was in the very early nineties, probably 1991. There were 486 “screamers” out then. I wasn’t on the cutting edge by any means but it served me well. It wasn’t running Windows. Oh no, back then I got excited about the brand new DOS 6.1. I’ve been running DOS and/or Windows based PC’s ever since.

I do remember the computer lab in college having some type of Apple computer. Probably an early Macintosh operating system. I never paid much attention to Macs because they wouldn’t run games like Wing Commander, which I spent hours playing between classes. Read More→

Windows 7 ate my optical drive!

By Brett · Comments (0)
Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

windows_7_vienna_brokenAnother quick Windows 7 beta testing update. It’s only fair to report the bad with the good and I seem to have found a bug. I’m not sure but this one may be a carry over from Vista.

Last week I wrapped up an event video project for a client. They wanted ten copies of the movie on DVD. I burned the first two or three with no problem, then the software (Sony DVD Architect Studio 4.0) locked up, or so I thought. Turns out it was looking for the optical drive to no avail. Apparently Windows 7 had eaten it! Read More→

Windows 7 feature review: Libraries

By Brett · Comments (0)
Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

windows_7_vienna_logo This is an update to my Windows 7 experience and a look at one of my favorite features. I’ve been using Windows 7 full time for about a week now and it’s really beginning to feel like home. The virtual tour software that I use in my business installed and runs like a champ, so unless Microsoft really screws up the pricing model when they release Windows 7 (i.e. make it too expensive) then I don’t see any reason why I’d have to go back to XP. Release Windows 7!

By Brett · Comments (0)
Monday, February 2nd, 2009

I think it’s ready too Kelly!

Kelly Poe is a big fan of Windows 7. So big he started a site to campaign for the release of Windows 7, the newest operating system from Microsoft. I just voted yes!

windows-se7en

As Kelly says though, I want Microsoft to take all the necessary time it needs to make sure it is fully baked. Just don’t put it off waiting on more Vista revenue. It ain’t gonna happen! Read More→

Windows 7 Beta Review

By Brett · Comments (0)
Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

unofficial-windows7-logoWhen Windows Vista was launched I was just starting my Middle Tennessee and Northern Alabama Virtual Tour company. I was advised to avoid Vista at that time because of the propriatery virtual tour and photo stitching software that I would be using.

Fast forward a couple of years and I still have only touched one system running Vista. I’m going to be a bit more brave with Windows 7. I downloaded the beta over the weekend and installed it on my old system. Read More→

Mind Mapping with MindJet

By Brett · Comments (0)
Friday, December 8th, 2006

The best way to “think it” is to “ink it”! Since becoming a student of learning and personal improvement I have discovered that it is vital to capture ideas on paper or electronically for later evaluation and use.

As part of a Dave Lakhani coaching group I learned about Mind Mapping software by a company called MindJet. Dave is a “rabid fan” and although I’ve only recently tried the software I can say that it is awesome!

I just learned about a webinar that Dave is doing for MindJet. Here are the details:

The webinar is called “Use The Power of an Hour & MindManager to Map 2007 Goals” and will show people how they can become more focused, and efficient in achieving business and personal goals by investing just one productive hour per day.

Dave plans to talk about his powerful formula for maximizing every hour, show people how to create what he calls “Fearsome Focus®” to maximize “personal effectiveness, help others identify and control once and for all the distractions that keep them from reaching their goals and create a “Master Life Vision Map.”

Here are the details, if you’re interested in attending:

Wednesday, December 13th
1:00- 2:00pm Pacific Standard Time

All the software you need for free! (Part 2)

By Brett · Comments (0)
Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

Yesterday you read part one of this series about how I trashed the filesystem on my spare Dell PC trying to do a dual-boot install with Ubuntu Linux and restored the XP install successfully. So far so good. Now for the REST of the story. . .

When I did the XP re-install I set aside part of the disk (about 10gb) to install Linux. The GParted utility still didn’t see this formatted partition as a partition. It saw it as unused space. As soon as I created a partition on that space the NTFS partition was “blown away” again. Read More→

All the software you need for free!

By Brett · Comments (2)
Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Well. . .sort of. It started when I adopted Firefox as my web browser of choice. The appeal of open source software.

Then I started this blog using WordPress which is another great software that is free and works well. Why not wade a little deeper? Now that I’ve got a DSL connection I can download more faster and get up to speed with the rest of the “power user” world so to speak.

Broadband and Online Videos

By Brett · Comments (0)
Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Even though I’ve been web marketing in one way or the other for over three years my family just recently got a broadband connection. I know, I know, but when you live this far back “in the woods” services are a long time coming. :)

It’s great because now we can watch videos online! You may have missed my first online video. If so you didn’t miss much, but you WILL miss a lot if you don’t consider using video on your website. Don’t wait. I did and I’m playing catch up now.

I’m lucky because I use SiteSell. They make it easy for the beginner as well as providing powerful tools for experienced webmasters. Now they have a great video demo of their service.

Check it out NOW!
